Roo Defender™ Catheter Cover Reduces Catheter Care Expense and Nursing Time

Study conducted at St. John Hospital & Medical Center showed major time savings and overall improvement in the standard of care.
 
TUCSON, Arizona, (May 23, 2012) – Roo Healthcare Solutions, a privately held medical device company, announced today that a recent clinical study conducted at St. John Hospital and Medical Center’s Renaissance Renal Research Institute and presented at the 2012 National Kidney Foundation (NKF) Spring Clinical Meetings found that the Roo Defender™ catheter cover reduced dialysis initiation time by one minute while improving the patients’ experience compared with conventional gauze and tape techniques.

A total of 33 patients were enrolled in the clinical trial. An independent observer conducted a time and motion study and recorded staff time required to prepare the catheter to initiate and terminate dialysis in a blinded fashion (the staff was unaware he/she was being observed). On a scale from one to five (one equaling the worst – five equaling the best) practitioners and patients rated the Roo Defender™ an average of:

  1. 4.6 for ease of use
  2. 4.5 for comfort
  3. 4.4 for safety
  4. 4.4 for cleanliness

According to the National Kidney Foundation, there are an estimated 370,000 dialysis patients in the United States.  Among these patients, and despite focused efforts by nephrologists to reduce the numbers, the prevalence of permanent catheter use in hemodialysis (HD) patients remains high at 20 percent.   

Currently, in the United States, substandard and non-universal catheter care practices jeopardize patient safety and increase dialysis provider costs. A lack of procedural protocols, time-consuming cleaning techniques, and suboptimal processes contribute to lost revenue and diminished patient satisfaction.
In most dialysis facilities, the catheter and ports are cleaned with an antiseptic and covered with gauze secured with tape. This approach can quickly lead to the gauze becoming soiled and the adhesive tape trapping debris and harboring bacteria. The use of gauze and tape also requires multiple, difficult manipulations of the HD catheter hub by healthcare professionals in the course of routine care, which has proven to be a factor in increasing the risk for intraluminal contamination, as well as a source of discomfort to the patient.
